Originally named "Badger State", the ship was completed on January 10th, 1919, and renamed once given to the United States Shipping Board. In 1939 the American Legion was transferred to the War Department and eventually used to rescue Princess Mrha of Norway in Petsamo, Finland, having lost her nation to the Nazis in 1940. The
